An Avianca flight bound for New York diverted to Miami International Airport after severe turbulence was reported, airport officials said. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said eight people were injured and taken to Miami hospitals early Friday, including one who needed care at a trauma center.
Avianca officials reported a different total: nine injured, including six passengers and three crew members. The two accounts give different injury counts.
Flight 42 had left Medellín, Colombia, for John F. Kennedy International Airport. Fire Rescue said the aircraft landed safely in Miami around 3:30 a.m. Avianca said its airport team was helping the remaining passengers make arrangements to continue to New York, while the Federal Aviation Administration said it would investigate.
