Christa Pike is conscious and speaking in a hospital after surviving Tennessee’s attempt to execute her on September 30, her attorneys said Tuesday. They said her prognosis remains unclear and expect a long recovery.
Officials administered two doses of the sedative pentobarbital during the attempt to put Pike to death. The 50-year-old was taken from a Nashville prison by ambulance after the second dose failed to kill her. She had been placed on a ventilator and was in critical condition.
Pike’s attorneys said she suffered severe damage to her arms and remains handcuffed and shackled to her hospital bed. They have asked Tennessee’s governor to commute her sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Pike had been set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.
