A 28-year-old man was hospitalized after an ICE agent shot him during an attempted arrest in New York City’s Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday, officials said. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the agent fired seven rounds at a car, striking Oscar Bergal in the neck.
The shooting happened around 4 p.m. near West 225th Street and Marble Hill Avenue. A 5-year-old boy was in the back seat; he was not hurt and is with a family member. Officials described Bergal’s injuries as non-life-threatening.
Tisch said police camera footage showed two plainclothes federal officers approach the car, one with a gun drawn, before the vehicle moved out of the camera’s view. The Department of Homeland Security said ICE was carrying out a targeted arrest operation and alleged that the man had ties to the Trinitarios gang. The NYPD said it did not take part in the shooting. The incident remains under investigation.
