A wildfire in the hills near La Habra Heights damaged three homes Monday afternoon, and at least one of them was destroyed.
The Palos fire reached about 20 acres by around 4:15 p.m. after starting shortly after 2:30 p.m. near the 2400 block of Las Palomas Drive in Whittier, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. Evacuation warnings were issued for nearby neighborhoods as crews worked in steep terrain.
Fire officials said one house was seen fully burning, while another structure was also on fire. No injuries had been reported, and one horse was rescued. The cause had not been determined Monday afternoon.
The department deployed 76 units and about 250 personnel, including helicopters dropping water. Officials said the blaze began in a canyon and moved uphill, while firefighters split efforts between containing flames below and protecting homes along a ridgeline. Narrow roads in La Habra Heights made access harder for crews.
