Former Houston officer gets probation in Harding Street raid case

Former Houston police officer Steven Bryant was sentenced Tuesday to five years of probation in the Harding Street raid case, after pleading guilty to a federal obstruction charge tied to falsified records.

Federal authorities said Bryant falsely stated in a supplemental report that he had previously helped former officer Gerald Goines with the Harding Street investigation. They also said Bryant identified a brown powder taken from Goines’ vehicle as heroin supposedly bought at the home targeted in the 2019 raid.

The raid at the southeast Houston home of Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas on Jan. 28, 2019, ended with both residents dead and four officers injured. Goines pleaded guilty last month to color-of-law charges after admitting he made false claims to obtain the search warrant, and he is awaiting sentencing. He is already serving a 60-year prison term after his 2024 murder convictions in the deaths of Tuttle and Nicholas.
