The owner of a Miami-Dade property is the third person arrested in a suspected cockfighting case. Deputies say 3,110 roosters found there were euthanized.
Marcie Rochell Newmark, 70, faces more than a dozen charges. The investigation began after FBI agents raided her 10-acre property in the county’s Horse County enclave on Oct. 3 and found thousands of roosters and cockfighting equipment. It is unclear whether the federal raid concerned animal fighting or a separate investigation.
Newmark told deputies she subleases the property to various people and did not know about the roosters’ care or training, according to an arrest report. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said county animal services euthanized the roosters. Deputies also reported finding pigs without food or water, a malnourished pony with an infection, and dogs, cats, turtles and birds in poor condition.
