A judge found probable cause to hold Oniel George Bygrave on two counts of first-degree assault after a reported machete attack injured two men at Seattle’s Hing Hay Park. Bygrave, who was arrested and accused of the attack, did not attend his first court hearing Wednesday afternoon.
Seattle police said the confrontation began with an argument around 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Chinatown-International District. Police allege Bygrave chased one man with a machete, then turned on a second man who tried to intervene. The city’s Real Time Crime Center cameras recorded part of the incident, police said.
The men, ages 31 and 48, were taken to a hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening. Court documents say one had a large cut to his head and the other a large cut to his upper back.
Bygrave told police the two men had approached him and told him to leave the park, according to court documents. He was expected to return to court Thursday for a bond hearing.
