Ten oceanfront homes in Dana Point have been red-tagged after coastal erosion and high surf damaged Beach Road, and seven more have been yellow-tagged.
City officials said Monday the damage in the Capistrano Bay area was driven by high tides and erosion tied to the remnants of Hurricane Marie. A local emergency has been declared along Beach Road as the shoreline continues to give way.
The city’s emergency services director issued the local emergency proclamation on Sept. 9 for the Capistrano Bay Community Services District after coastal flooding, according to the city. Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley said she is pressing for a county emergency declaration that could help speed permits and support beach sand replacement efforts.
Nearby Laguna Beach has also declared a local emergency over severe sand loss and coastal erosion, adding to concerns along the South Orange County shoreline.
