Flash flooding strands drivers and disrupts travel across coastal Connecticut
Emergency crews in Westport rescued 13 people from vehicles trapped in floodwaters on Sunday after heavy rain triggered flash flooding across coastal Connecticut, parts of Westchester County and northern New Jersey.
The National Weather Service said the hardest-hit areas included a stretch of coastal Connecticut along Interstate 95. In the Norwalk-to-Westport corridor, 6 to 7 inches of rain fell Sunday morning, with rainfall rates reaching 3 to 4 inches per hour. Flooding led to road closures and inundated some downtown businesses in Westport.
Travel was also affected across the region. Metro-North and Amtrak reported delays and cancellations on lines to New Haven because of flooding, and Tweed New Haven Airport closed its departures terminal. Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont and other state officials urged drivers to stay off flooded roads and avoid standing water even after the rain eased.
