Monet Swann says a $2 water purchase in Midtown Atlanta cost her $2,400 after she scanned a seller’s QR code.
Swann said a young man approached her near 10th Street and Techwood Drive around 5 p.m. on Oct. 1. She had not planned to buy water but agreed to pay $2 to support him. The code he showed her was for a Zelle payment.
After driving away, Swann noticed that $1,200 had been charged instead of $2. She then checked Apple Pay and found another $1,200 transaction. She has not received a refund from her bank.
Atlanta police are investigating the theft. They have not identified a suspect or confirmed whether anyone else was targeted. Anyone with information about the Midtown incident is encouraged to contact police.
