Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen plans to examine the Broward Sheriff’s Office’s spending in person while county officials investigate how Sheriff Gregory Tony uses its budget.
Officials opened the inquiry Friday. It followed a social media post from Tony saying he would halt talks on the office’s $850 million budget. Bogen has called for accountability and transparency in the spending.
The budget dispute comes after a vote to take county fire rescue out of the sheriff’s office’s control. Broward leaders have also discussed whether to seek other public safety arrangements for Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades.
