California has sued the Trump administration to stop the planned closure of the National Archives facility in San Bruno, which houses the San Francisco collection.
Attorney General Rob Bonta said the plan would disperse more than 175 years of historical records across the country, making them harder for families, researchers and tribal communities to access. The federal government says it would distribute the collection among five National Archives facilities and close the San Bruno site to cut costs.
Bonta argues that federal officials did not adequately assess the effects of the move or give the public a meaningful chance to comment. The Trump administration had not immediately commented on the lawsuit.
