Oklahoma beat No. 1 Texas 27-24 on Saturday when Tate Sandell made a 47-yard field goal on the final play of their Red River rivalry game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. It was the Longhorns’ first loss of the season.
The Sooners scored touchdowns on defense and special teams: Peyton Bowen returned an interception 42 yards, and Dakoda Fields recovered a blocked punt in the end zone. Oklahoma improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Southeastern Conference; Texas fell to 4-1 and 1-1.
Texas quarterback Arch Manning threw three touchdown passes, but his second interception came with 19 seconds left. John Mateer then completed two throws to put Oklahoma in position for Sandell’s kick. Earlier, Texas kicker Gianni Spetic missed a 53-yard attempt with 1:55 remaining.
For Oklahoma, it was a first win over a No. 1 team since 2007 and its first against a top-ranked Texas team after five previous meetings without a victory.
