San Francisco moves toward 45-day halt on new data center approvals
San Francisco supervisors are advancing a 45-day moratorium on approvals for new data centers while city planners review potential risks and draft updated rules.
Supervisor Shamann Walton is set to introduce the measure Tuesday. The proposal would pause city approvals as the planning committee studies the issue and writes new code for data centers, an area Walton said is still governed by rules that have not been updated since 2001.
The push comes as demand for data centers rises with the expansion of artificial intelligence. Of San Francisco’s 12 data centers, two are in Bayview, which Walton represents, and the proposal could affect a planned expansion there. Residents in the neighborhood have raised environmental health concerns for decades.
Similar moratorium proposals are expected to come before officials in Richmond and Oakland in the coming weeks.
