Cavan Sullivan became the youngest scorer in U.S. men’s national team history as the Americans beat Mexico 3-0 in a Saturday night friendly. He was 17 years and five days old when he scored in the 62nd minute.
The Philadelphia Union forward intercepted a pass from Mexico goalkeeper José Rangel and lifted a long shot over him to put the U.S. ahead 2-0. Sullivan said the moment was a lifelong dream. The game was the 80th meeting between the rivals.
Julian Hall, 18, had opened the scoring in the 28th minute after Gio Reyna’s cross deflected off Rangel. It was Hall’s third goal in three international games. Mexico went down to 10 players when Mateo Chávez received a red card in the 67th minute, and Malik Tillman scored the U.S. team’s third goal in the 84th.
