Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has selected a plan for a one-mile stretch of Forest Lawn Drive near Griffith Park, her office said. It has not explained how the design would slow speeding drivers.
The plan retains the road’s four existing lanes and adds a protected left-turn lane and protected bike lanes, according to the mayor’s office. A city official who was not authorized to speak publicly said it also includes widening parts of the road.
The mayor’s office said the changes are intended to improve traffic, cycling and pedestrian safety while keeping vehicles moving. It did not answer questions about a timeline for implementing the plan or when the community would receive more details.
The design has become a point of debate in the Los Angeles mayoral race. A consultant for Forest Lawn Memorial Parks and Mortuaries previously proposed widening the road. The company operates a Hollywood Hills cemetery accessible only by Forest Lawn Drive.
