Texas hospitals regain nearly $12 billion in Medicaid funding
The federal government has restored nearly $12 billion in Medicaid funding to Texas hospitals, Gov. Greg Abbott said Thursday.
The money had been halted on Sept. 1, the start of the state’s new fiscal year. The dispute centered on how Texas taxes hospitals to generate the state share required for federal matching funds.
Without the funding, Texas hospitals were facing losses of about $27 million a day. Abbott said the restored funding covers hospitals, physicians, rural clinics, nursing facilities and behavioral health providers across the state.
The Texas Hospital Association said the decision prevents major disruption to the state’s healthcare system. The group said the funding loss had threatened the Texas healthcare safety net.
