An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man in Manhattan while a 5-year-old child sat in the back seat of his car. The shooting in the Marble Hill neighborhood prompted protests and a dispute between New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin over ICE operations.
Mamdani condemned the Thursday shooting and said he would demand that President Donald Trump end ICE operations in New York. At a Friday news conference, Mullin criticized policies he described as “sanctuary” measures and pointed to criminal charges against the man who was shot, Oscar Belgal.
New York police released body-camera footage showing an ICE agent in a construction vest holding a rifle as Belgal, described as semi-conscious, was taken into custody. Two city officers put him in a police car and drove him to a nearby hospital. Demonstrators clashed with police Thursday night.
