Three dead after floodwaters sweep through Navajo Nation area in New Mexico
Two adults and a child were found dead after being swept away by floodwaters early Wednesday near Newcomb on the Navajo Nation in northwestern New Mexico, authorities said.
Tribal police received the report around 12:30 a.m. after heavy rain left roads and other areas flooded. Search crews later recovered the three bodies. Authorities have not released further details about what happened and said the drownings are under investigation.
Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren thanked first responders for searching overnight in dangerous conditions and offered condolences to the victims' family. The Navajo Police Department also reported multiple damaged and flooded roads, while weather officials warned that more thunderstorms, heavy rain and flash flooding could continue across the region through the next several days.
