President Donald Trump has approved execution by firing squad for Nidal Hasan, the former Army major convicted of killing 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, the Defense Department said. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the method, according to department spokesperson Sean Parnell.
Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, opened fire at the base on Nov. 5, 2009, killing 13 people and wounding 32. He was convicted in 2013 of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder, and was sentenced to death.
Acting Army Secretary Adam R. Telle will set the execution’s time and place, Parnell said. If carried out, it would be the U.S. military’s first execution by firing squad since 1945. Its last execution by any method was a hanging in 1961.
