Two people died in a three-vehicle crash that closed all eastbound lanes of I-10 East Freeway at Monmouth Drive in east Houston, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said. One vehicle caught fire.
Preliminary information indicates a red Ford Explorer struck the rear of a white Jeep Wrangler while both traveled east. The Explorer’s driver reportedly drove recklessly before the collision, and the vehicle went down an embankment. Its adult male driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Jeep’s sole occupant was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Authorities reported no initial signs of impairment among those involved.
Westbound lanes were unaffected. Authorities expected some eastbound lanes to reopen within an hour of their update and all lanes within two hours. The crash remains under investigation.
