Kimberly Guilfoyle said Tuesday she would resign as U.S. ambassador to Greece after the White House asked her to step down. Press secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed the request, and President Donald Trump said Guilfoyle would leave the post.
The decision followed reports alleging that Guilfoyle offered access to administration officials in return for help paying her debt. An associate had shared text messages indicating she sought $100,000 to cover an American Express bill before her Senate confirmation hearing last year. The messages do not, on their own, establish that any access was provided.
Guilfoyle announced her plans in a post on X less than two hours after the White House briefing. She denied the allegations and said she intended to defend her name. No prospective replacement for the Greece post had been identified at the White House on Tuesday.
