NJ Transit has diverted Midtown Direct trains to Hoboken for five weeks while crews finish work on the Portal North Bridge. The change affects about 30,000 daily riders, the agency says.
Trains on the Morristown, Gladstone and Montclair-Boonton lines are going to Hoboken instead of New York’s Penn Station. From there, passengers can take PATH to 33rd Street, the 126 bus to Port Authority or a ferry to West 39th Street.
The final construction phase will shift the remaining track from the 116-year-old Portal Bridge onto its replacement over the Hackensack River. NJ Transit says the upgrade should make trips more reliable. Commuter Natalie Ortman said the diversion adds 30 to 45 minutes to her journey.
