Two South King County high schools have ended their varsity football seasons early over concerns about player safety. The decision affects Hazen High School in Renton and Todd Beamer High School in Federal Way.
The Federal Way School District said it had discontinued Todd Beamer’s varsity schedule for the rest of the season after assessing the team’s physical health. Officials cited thin rosters and the risk that further injuries could leave the teams unable to play safely.
Todd Beamer coach Rodney McCurry said the team began with 39 players and has had seven season-ending injuries. He believes lower enrollment contributed to the small initial roster. Some members of the school community expressed disappointment, while others supported putting player safety first.
