At least four deaths were reported after Isaias hit Florida’s Panhandle as a Category 2 hurricane late Friday, authorities said. It weakened to a post-tropical cyclone on Saturday, but forecasters and officials warned of flooding and tornadoes as it moved inland.
Local officials reported two deaths in Escambia County, Florida, and two in Alabama. Falling trees killed one person in Escambia County and another in Birmingham, Alabama. A person whose death was linked to the storm was found in a closed garage with a generator running, while four family members were hospitalized with carbon monoxide poisoning, the Escambia County sheriff’s office said.
More than 679,000 customers across Florida, Alabama and Georgia lacked power Saturday afternoon. Isaias also brought down trees and flooded highways. Parts of the affected region were reopening by evening, though officials cautioned that rising rivers and water-covered roads remained dangerous.
