A man was fatally shot on a Culver CityBus in Mar Vista on Thursday evening, and the suspected gunman remained at large, police said. Reports identified the victim as the bus driver, though police had not confirmed his role as of Thursday night.

Los Angeles police spokesperson Charles Miller said the shooting occurred around 5:15 p.m. near South Centinela and Mitchell avenues. Police said multiple shots were fired. The victim, a man in his 40s, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

A nearby resident, Katty Garcia, said she heard three shots and later saw medics performing CPR on a man taken off the bus. Police described the suspect as a white man who had a bicycle and fled. The department’s West Bureau Homicide is handling the case.

Culver City Mayor Freddy Puza said bus service would be suspended through the weekend to give transit workers time to grieve.
