A former Biltmore Hotel employee has been charged with grand theft after nearly 200 lobster tails and other food were reported missing from the Coral Gables hotel’s kitchens. The allegations have not been proven in court.
Diego Alfredo Medina Acosta, 37, was arrested October 5 after the head chef found discrepancies in a weekly inventory. The reported shortages included 192 lobster tails, 116.7 pounds of pork belly and portions of snapper, along with other food. The hotel valued the missing items at $7,854.36.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage that allegedly showed Medina Acosta entering food-storage areas before his shifts. One recording reportedly showed him moving a cart of lobster and returning it with some lobster missing. He told police he had moved the lobster to thaw, but reportedly could not explain the shortage.
A judge found probable cause for the charge, set bond at $2,500 and ordered Medina Acosta to stay away from the hotel. He has pleaded not guilty.
