Miami is closing enclosed slides at city parks for further safety reviews after 13-year-old Olvin Cabrera died following an incident at Shenandoah Park.
Crews boarded up the slide where Cabrera became trapped on Sept. 25. Commissioner Rolando Escalona had called for enclosed slides across the city to remain closed until additional reviews are completed.
Cabrera’s mother, Estefania Valladares, said someone pulled him from the slide. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Valladares also said an investigator told her a protruding bolt at the place where her son became trapped had been replaced. The city had not confirmed that account by Wednesday night.
The circumstances of Cabrera’s death remain under investigation.
