Immigration agents shot and wounded a man in a car with a 5-year-old child in New York City's Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said. The mayor said early reports indicated agents had surrounded the car before firing several rounds.
The child was physically unharmed, Mamdani said. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said officers found the child with a family member during a wellness check. She identified the man as 28 and said he had been arrested in New York City in 2023 and 2025.
The Department of Homeland Security said ICE officers had been conducting an operation in the Bronx to arrest a man from the Dominican Republic with a prior criminal conviction. Mamdani said he had sought the wounded man's release in calls with President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Mullin, but the talks failed. He also called for ICE to end its enforcement operations in the city.
