A driver has been released after a crash on Interstate 10 in west Phoenix that killed a 4-year-old boy and seriously injured his 2-year-old brother, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Authorities say the driver caused the crash.
DPS said a Dodge Challenger hit the back of a Toyota Corolla in the eastbound lanes near 43rd Avenue shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday, sending the Corolla into a Chrysler Pacifica. The older boy was properly buckled in the Corolla’s back seat and died after being taken to a hospital. His mother, who was driving, was not hurt.
DPS said it plans to submit a detailed complaint alleging distracted driving by the Challenger driver. Detectives determined the driver was not impaired, but officials have not said how the driver was allegedly distracted or what led to the crash. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office will decide whether to file charges. The boy who died has not been publicly identified.
