Microsoft is among eight companies the Trump administration is suspending from a federal green card sponsorship program. Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that the Redmond company, Adobe and six outsourcing firms will be unable to file new applications or advance pending ones through the Permanent Labor Certification Program, or PERM.
The administration alleges the companies used visa programs to replace U.S. employees with lower-paid foreign workers. Vance said Microsoft laid off 6,000 American workers last year while receiving 6,300 H-1B visas and nearly 3,000 green cards.
Microsoft disputed the administration’s account. It said about 80% of the roughly 6,000 H-1B applications it filed last fiscal year concerned existing employees whose status was being extended or changed. The company said its new-hire filings involved people already legally in the United States and amounted to 1% of its U.S. workforce.
