Newly released messages from Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson’s office show officials raising concerns about the response to the deadly Bite of Seattle shooting while a public briefing was delayed for nearly five hours.
In a message to Ferguson that night, U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal questioned Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson’s handling of the incident. The shooting took place at about 6 p.m.; a major public press conference came close to 11 p.m.
Police were prepared to brief reporters by 7:30 p.m. Officers at the scene had initially been told to wait until dignitaries arrived, and Seattle police Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis said Brian Surratt, the mayor’s second-in-command, directed them to hold off. At 7:41 p.m., Wilson messaged Ferguson that a press conference would likely happen later that evening.
