Hurricane Isaias has strengthened to Category 2 as Gulf Coast residents prepare for a possible landfall. It is the first Atlantic hurricane of the year, with millions of people in the region on alert.

National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan said the storm had gained strength over several hours. He expected it to move northeast overnight before turning north, with its center potentially reaching the Alabama coast or Florida Panhandle. The track could still change.

Residents are securing homes and gathering supplies, while state and local officials are issuing evacuation orders. Forecasters warn of heavy rain, damaging winds, flooding and storm surge, as well as possible tornadoes.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said the state had mobilized for the storm. He said it might weaken but that officials were preparing for the possibility of a strong landfall.
