Tennessee corrections commissioner Frank Strada has submitted his resignation after an execution attempt on death row prisoner Christa Pike failed. Gov. Bill Lee announced the resignation Saturday and said Strada would leave later in October.
Pike survived a lethal injection attempt Wednesday. The state is launching an independent investigation into what went wrong. Strada said he believes the department followed its established protocol, but that stepping aside would allow the review to proceed in Tennesseans’ best interests.
Pike’s attorney Randy Spivey, who witnessed the procedure, said he counted seven needles inserted into her left arm. A court filing said Pike remained unconscious and on a ventilator at a hospital as of Friday.
