Investigators focus on broadcast audio in deadly Chatsworth helicopter crash
Federal investigators say audio and video captured during a live television broadcast may be the clearest evidence yet in the crash of an NBC4 helicopter in Chatsworth that killed three people.
The National Transportation Safety Board is reviewing wreckage, maintenance logbooks, security video, weather records, witness accounts and the pilot’s training, according to investigator Fabian Salazar. He said the broadcast recording is “probably the most important piece of evidence” recovered so far.
The helicopter, a Eurocopter AS350 B2, went down around 7 p.m. Tuesday while covering a fatal Metro bus collision. Killed were reporter Eliana Moreno, pilot George Marciniw and 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia, who was on the ground when the aircraft crashed.
Authorities are still working to determine the cause. The recording captured the aircraft’s final moments before the feed cut out, making it central to the federal investigation.
