ExxonMobil reports unauthorized carbon monoxide release at Baytown refinery
ExxonMobil reported an unauthorized release of more than 54,000 pounds of carbon monoxide at its Baytown refinery after a boiler malfunction, according to an initial filing with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
The event lasted from about 1 a.m. to 3:59 a.m. on Sept. 8. ExxonMobil told regulators the emissions were tied to a loss of airflow to the boiler.
Carbon monoxide can contribute to smog and ozone. The Houston area does not meet federal ozone standards in many places, and Baytown has long faced scrutiny over industrial emissions.
Air Alliance Houston previously found ExxonMobil's Baytown complex was among the area's largest sources of unauthorized air releases from 2017 to 2024 and led the region in permit violations over that period.
