Powerful waves and coastal flooding linked to Rachel have badly damaged homes in Southern California, with further flooding still possible, authorities warned.
On the Long Beach Peninsula, waves damaged a shoreline retaining wall, sending water into streets and homes. City officials said inspectors marked eight buildings containing 13 homes unsafe to enter. Mandatory evacuations remain in effect for several homes on Seaside Walk, while other Peninsula properties are under evacuation warnings.
Long Beach crews placed 30 heavy-duty sandbags against the damaged wall, and the city plans to bring in more sand next week to reinforce vulnerable stretches of coast. In Newport Beach, officials declared a local emergency after widespread coastal flooding. Crews worked to restore beach barriers and drain flooded streets; several waterfront areas, including Newport Pier and Balboa Pier, remained temporarily closed.
