Three men face federal charges over an alleged tax refund and money-laundering scheme involving more than $74 million, prosecutors said.
IRS agents searched a BP gas station and convenience store on West Fayetteville Road in College Park on Wednesday. U.S. Attorney Theodore Hertzberg said the business also cashes checks and that the men allegedly brought Treasury refund checks there to exchange for tens of millions of dollars in cash.
A federal grand jury indicted Gustavo Rojano Salazar, Gabriel Rojano Salazar and Andres Huerta Rendon last week. Investigators allege they began filing fraudulent tax returns in January 2019, using identification documents from Mexico to obtain taxpayer identification numbers. The three were arraigned Wednesday on charges including mail fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy to launder money. Two also face immigration charges.
