Newport Beach declared a local emergency after ocean water flooded streets and properties on the Balboa Peninsula on Friday.
Aerial footage showed people wading along sidewalks and streets, some in water up to their knees, while vehicles were nearly half-submerged. The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood advisory through Tuesday and a warning set to expire at 3 p.m. Sunday.
City officials said crews would work overnight and through the weekend to rebuild sand berms, monitor ocean conditions and bring in more resources if needed. City Manager Seimone Jurjis said the work was aimed at reinforcing vulnerable areas before the next high tide.
Residents near the water prepared their homes with sandbags. Temporary street closures and parking restrictions may be imposed as the response continues.
