Eight passengers were injured when an Avianca flight hit severe turbulence and diverted to Miami International Airport.
Flight 252 was traveling from Medellín, Colombia, to New York when the turbulence struck. Federal aviation officials have opened an investigation into the incident.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel and emergency medical teams met the aircraft after it landed. First responders said eight passengers were stabilized and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where hospital officials said they were being treated mainly for moderate to severe head and shoulder injuries.
