A crowd of more than 1,000 gathered Friday evening in Foley Square to demand that ICE leave New York City. The protest followed Thursday’s shooting of a man by ICE agents in Marble Hill.
Police said 28-year-old Oscar Bergal was wounded below the ear, near his neck, after at least one agent discharged seven rounds. Officials said a 5-year-old boy believed to be Bergal’s son was in the vehicle. The child was not hurt and is in a family member’s care.
ICE claims Bergal ignored an order to get out of the vehicle and tried to use it against agents. Critics reject those allegations.
Hands Off NYC organized the gathering across from 26 Federal Plaza, where immigration advocates and elected officials joined protesters. Representatives of the New York Immigration Coalition, Make the Road New York and the New York Civil Liberties Union were among those present.
