Service members stopped and disarmed a woman after investigators said she tried to kill her two daughters following a crash on southbound Interstate 5 near Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
The crash happened Monday morning in Pierce County. Several drivers stopped to help the family, but witnesses said the mother began acting erratically and pulled out a knife while people checked on those involved.
Army Sgt. 1st Class Jeff Hytower and Sgt. Ricardo Nunez had seen the crash from the opposite direction and stopped. Washington National Guard combat medic Sgt. Alexis McKay also came to help. Hytower and Nunez intervened as the woman went after her teenage daughter, then restrained her until help arrived.
