Newport Beach has closed all city beaches and piers until further notice because of flooding, officials said Saturday morning. Police urged people to stay away from the closed areas and follow instructions so emergency crews can work safely.
High surf flooded streets on the Balboa Peninsula on Friday, prompting the city to declare a local emergency. Videos posted online showed knee-high water and homes and parked vehicles affected along the coast. Crews used pumps and opened tide valves to reduce the flooding, which appeared to ease Friday afternoon.
On Saturday, crews were building sand walls to limit further flooding. The emergency response was expected to continue through the weekend. A coastal flood warning for Los Angeles and Orange County beaches remains in effect until 3 p.m. Sunday, and city officials urged people in flood-prone areas to move vehicles and belongings away from places that could flood.
