A 21 Air cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sept. 6 and hit two vehicles, killing five people in a van carrying an airport cleaning crew. Five others were seriously injured.
The first officer warned that the plane was approaching too fast before the crash, according to an NTSB account. The aircraft was carrying cargo for Amazon Prime.
Federal investigators’ initial report says the plane was about 105 feet above Runway 30 when it crossed the runway threshold. Its landing gear touched down roughly 3,750 feet beyond that point on a 9,360-foot runway. Flight-recorder data showed the pilots tried to take off again in the final seconds, but too little runway remained.
After leaving the paved surface, the plane crossed Northwest 67th Avenue and struck a van with seven people inside and an SUV with one occupant, investigators said.
