Rig collapse injures four in Brickell
An 85-foot piling rig collapsed Monday morning at a Brickell construction site, injuring three workers and a woman driving nearby, Miami Fire Chief Robert Hevia said.
The collapse happened shortly after 8 a.m. at Citadel’s 58-story project at 1201 Brickell Bay Drive. Hevia said the rig operator, 47, jumped from the cab as it tipped. Two other workers, ages 27 and 29, were trapped when part of the rig crushed a temporary container office at the site, and rescue crews cut through the steel structure to free them.
The woman was driving south on Brickell Bay Drive between Southeast 12th and 13th streets when the rig fell onto the hood of her white BMW SUV, Hevia said. The engine caught fire, but she escaped through the back of the vehicle with minor injuries. She was taken to HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, while the three workers were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
Related Companies, the developer, said it is working with city and county building departments to secure the site and investigate. The collapse also damaged two parked cars, and crews responded to a fuel spill.
