Rig collapse injures four in Miami's Brickell area
Four people were taken to hospitals after a drilling rig fell onto three vehicles and a construction container in Miami's Brickell neighborhood on Monday morning, trapping two workers and sparking a vehicle fire.
Miami Fire Rescue said the collapse happened around 8 a.m. near Southeast 12th Street and Brickell Bay Drive. Rescue crews freed two workers, ages 27 and 29, from the crushed container while firefighters put out flames from a BMW hit by the rig. Fire Chief Robert Hevia said the injured included the two workers, the 47-year-old rig operator and the BMW driver, and all were in stable condition with minor injuries.
Hevia said two other vehicles damaged in the collapse were parked and empty, and all 18 workers at the site were accounted for. Miami police restricted traffic on Brickell Bay Drive in the area between Southeast 12th and Southeast 13th streets. Officials have not yet said what caused the rig to fall.
